What the key terms actually mean
Industry jargon in plain English.
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme)
MCS is an independent quality assurance scheme for small-scale renewable energy installations. An MCS-certified installer has been audited to prove they design, install, and commission heat pumps to recognised standards. This is not optional — government grants (including the Scottish Government's heating grant) require your heat pump to be installed by an MCS-certified installer. If the installer is not MCS-certified, you cannot claim the grant.
Our approach: We install through MCS-certified partners.
Verify on the MCS registerInsurance-backed guarantee (IBG)
An insurance-backed guarantee means your workmanship warranty is underwritten by an independent insurance provider — so even if the installation company were to cease trading, your guarantee remains valid and enforceable. This is provided through the Independent Warranty Association (IWA).
Lessons from the insulation scandal
Why we address it openly — and what protects you.
What happened and why it matters
Scotland's insulation scandal saw thousands of homes fitted with substandard cavity wall and external wall insulation under government-backed schemes. The root causes were clear: installers were paid per job with minimal quality oversight, installations were rushed, and properties were not properly assessed for suitability. Many homes suffered damp, mould, and structural damage.
We raise this because it is a legitimate concern for anyone considering a government-supported energy improvement. Heat pump installations are different — but only if the right protections are in place. Here is what protects you:
- MCS certification is mandatory. Unlike the insulation schemes, heat pump grants require the installer to be independently certified and regularly audited under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.
- Proper design before installation. MCS requires a full heat-loss calculation and system design for every property — not a one-size-fits-all approach.
- Insurance-backed guarantees. Installations come with an insurance-backed guarantee — if the installer ceases trading, your cover continues.
- Independent advice first. Because we are a separate advisory business (not the installer), we have no incentive to push you towards an installation that isn't right for your property.
