7-STEP GUIDE

What to Expect at Every Stage

Told from the perspective of the homeowner — because that's what matters.

Step 01

Free Property Survey

Within 3–5 working days

You call 0141 230 0198. We arrange a free, no-obligation visit to your property. A qualified heating engineer assesses your home — room sizes, insulation, existing radiators, hot water demand. No pressure, no commitment.

What happens
  • Engineer visits at a time convenient for you
  • Full heat loss calculation carried out
  • Existing radiator suitability checked
  • Property type and age assessed
  • Your heating habits discussed
What homeowners say

"Most homeowners say this visit takes around 90 minutes and feels like a helpful conversation, not a sales pitch."

Step 02

Government Grant Eligibility Check

Same day as survey

On the same visit, we confirm your government grant eligibility. Standard homes qualify for a £7,500 grant. Rural and remote properties qualify for the higher £9,000 rural uplift grant.

What happens
  • Postcode checked for rural uplift eligibility
  • Standard vs remote rural status confirmed
  • Total available support calculated
  • Any additional schemes (ECO4) flagged
  • You get a clear picture of what you'll pay
What homeowners say

"This is often the moment people realise how affordable the switch actually is. The grant makes a huge difference."

Step 03

System Design

Included in survey

Based on the heat loss calculation, we design the right system for your home. This includes selecting the heat pump model, confirming radiator compatibility, and planning the hot water system.

What happens
  • Heat pump model selected (typically 8–12kW for Scottish homes)
  • Radiator sizes calculated to work at lower flow temperatures
  • Hot water cylinder sizing confirmed
  • Outdoor unit placement agreed
  • Written system design provided
What homeowners say

"You'll receive a detailed written proposal — not just a number. You see exactly what's being installed and why."

Step 04

Government Grant Application

2–4 weeks to approval
We handle this

This is where most homeowners expect stress — and find there isn't any. We submit the full grant application on your behalf. You sign one form. We handle everything else.

What happens
  • We prepare all application documents
  • You sign the application — one signature
  • SEE submits to the grant scheme administrator
  • We track the application and chase if needed
  • Grant approval typically 2–4 weeks
What homeowners say

"Less paperwork than you might expect. You review and sign the application; the supporting documents are prepared for you."

Step 05

Professional Installation

Typically 2–3 days

Once the grant is approved, installation is booked. We install through MCS-certified partners. The complete system is installed in 2–3 days. Your old boiler or heating system is removed. The new heat pump is commissioned and tested.

What happens
  • Day 1: Outdoor unit installed, pipework run
  • Day 2: Indoor unit, cylinder, controls fitted
  • Day 3: Commissioning, testing, handover
  • Old boiler removed and disposed of
  • Full system test at operating temperature
What homeowners say

"Some disruption for 2–3 days, then the system is commissioned and heating is restored."

Step 06

MCS Certificate + DNO Notification

Within days of installation

After installation, all the compliance documentation is handled. Your MCS certificate is issued, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) is notified, and all warranty documentation is registered.

What happens
  • MCS installation certificate issued
  • DNO notification submitted on your behalf
  • Manufacturer warranty registered
  • All documentation provided to you
  • Building warrant compliance if required
What homeowners say

"You don't need to do anything. You receive a folder with all your certificates and documentation."

Step 07

Your First Warm Home

Ongoing support
Your new life begins

Your first winter with a heat pump. Bills down. Carbon down. Ongoing support from Scottish Energy Efficiency. Most homeowners report the house is warmer and more comfortable than before.

What happens
  • Full handover and controls walkthrough
  • Optimal settings explained for Scottish climate
  • Ongoing technical support available
  • Annual servicing recommended (simple, low cost)
  • Scottish Energy Efficiency aftercare team
What homeowners say

"Your first winter is when you learn the controls and can compare bills with your previous heating system."

FAQ — CUSTOMER JOURNEY

Journey Questions Answered

What is the typical timeline from first call to installation?

Most Scottish homeowners complete the journey in 8–12 weeks. This includes the survey (arranged within 3–5 working days), the government grant application (typically 2–4 weeks to approval), and the 2–3 day installation itself.

Do I need to be home during installation?

Yes, someone should be home during the 2–3 day installation. The engineers will need access to all rooms on day one for the heat loss check, and to the plant room or airing cupboard where the indoor unit is installed.

What happens to my old boiler?

Your old oil tank, boiler or electric heating system is decommissioned and removed as part of the installation. Disposal is handled by the installation team.

Will I need to redecorate after installation?

Minor making-good is included — pipe runs are chased and plastered, any minor decoration damage is repaired. In most cases, the disruption is minimal and no redecoration is required.

What if my grant application is refused?

Grant refusals are rare if you meet the basic eligibility criteria. If refused, we will investigate why and resubmit if appropriate. You are under no obligation to proceed if a grant is not available.

Can the journey be faster than 8–12 weeks?

In some cases yes — typically when grant approval is fast and installation slots are available. In the Highlands or islands, logistics can add time. We always give you a realistic timeline at the survey stage.

What ongoing support do I get?

Scottish Energy Efficiency provides ongoing aftercare. Annual servicing is recommended and straightforward. The heat pump itself has very few moving parts and is designed for 20–25 years of operation.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the installation?

Clear access to the area where the outdoor unit will be sited (usually on an external wall or on a small pad). Access to the plant room or airing cupboard. That's usually all that's needed.
