Grant Journey — What You Do vs What We Do
Survey visit
The free survey visit confirms your property's eligibility. Rural or remote rural classification is checked from your postcode. ECO4 eligibility assessed if relevant.
Be home for the survey visit. That's it.
We prepare the application
Scottish Energy Efficiency prepares the complete grant application — property details, heat loss calculation, system design, proposed equipment, installer certification. This typically takes 2–3 business days.
Nothing. We handle all document preparation.
You sign
The completed application is sent to you for signature. One form. Usually 2 pages. Your signature authorises the application on your behalf.
Sign one form. Return it to us electronically or by post.
We submit
We submit the application to the grant scheme administrator directly. We track the application and respond to any information requests without troubling you.
Nothing. We submit and monitor.
Grant approved
The grant scheme administrator sends a grant approval letter. Typical timeframe: 2–4 weeks from submission. We receive a copy and book your installation.
Receive your approval letter. Check it confirms your expected amount.
Grant deducted at installation
The grant amount is deducted directly from your installation invoice. You pay only the net amount (installation cost minus grant). You do not handle any grant money — it flows directly.
Pay the net invoice amount only.
Grant Facts to Know
BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) = England only
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is an England and Wales scheme. Scottish properties use the Scottish Government's heating grant — which is generally more generous, especially for rural properties.
Scottish Government solar grant stopped June 2024
The Scottish Government solar PV grant was discontinued in June 2024. Solar PV installations in Scotland no longer qualify for government grant funding, though zero-rated VAT applies until 31 March 2027.
ECO4 runs to December 2026
The ECO4 scheme (for lower-income households) is funded to December 2026. Applications are processed on a first-come basis. If you may be eligible, start the process promptly.
You cannot apply for the grant directly
The government heat pump grant requires an MCS-certified installer to apply on your behalf. You cannot apply independently. We install through MCS-certified partners.
Grant Questions Answered
Do I need to do anything to get the government grant?
Very little. You sign one form. Scottish Energy Efficiency prepares and submits the complete application on your behalf, tracks progress, responds to information requests, and receives the approval. You are not involved in the administration.
How much is the government grant in Scotland?
£7,500 grant for standard properties, or £9,000 grant for rural and remote properties. The grant is deducted directly from your installation invoice — you do not handle the money.
How long does the government grant application take?
Typically 2–4 weeks from submission to approval. Scottish Energy Efficiency submits promptly and monitors progress. Most applications are approved within this window.
What if my grant application is refused?
Grant refusals are rare for eligible properties. If a refusal occurs, SEE investigates the reason and either resolves it or advises you. You are under no obligation to proceed with installation if a satisfactory grant is not available.
Can I combine the government grant with other support?
ECO4 provides full-cost funding independently. Zero-rated VAT applies to heat pump installations (and solar until March 2027) regardless of grant status.
Is the government grant available everywhere in Scotland?
Yes — the grant is available across all of Scotland, with the rural uplift applying to properties in rural and remote rural postcodes. It is not available in England or Wales (where BUS applies instead).
What happens if the government scheme changes or ends?
Grants are applied for before installation begins. Once your grant is approved, the amount is locked in. Changes to the scheme do not affect already-approved applications.
