FAQ — LPG TO HEAT PUMP

LPG Questions Answered

Why switch from LPG to a heat pump?

LPG prices are linked to global oil markets and can be highly volatile. Heat pump running costs are more predictable and significantly lower — typically saving £600–£1,100 per year vs LPG. The LPG tank is removed, eliminating delivery logistics and price uncertainty.

What happens to the LPG tank?

Your LPG tank is decommissioned and removed as part of the installation. The supplier notifies and collects the tank. You no longer need to manage deliveries or monitor levels.

What government grant is available for LPG-to-heat-pump?

The same Scottish Government grant as oil: £7,500 grant (standard), or £9,000 grant for rural properties (rural uplift).

Is LPG-to-heat-pump common in Scotland?

Yes — many Scottish off-gas-grid properties use LPG, particularly newer developments built without oil heating. The switch to heat pump follows the same process as oil replacement.

Will the heat pump cost less to run than my LPG boiler?

In almost all cases, yes. LPG costs approximately 6–8p/kWh of heat. A heat pump with a COP of 3.0 produces heat at approximately 8–9p/kWh of electricity (depending on tariff). For rural properties on off-peak tariffs, heat pump running costs are typically 50–60% of equivalent LPG running costs.

What size heat pump do I need for an LPG-replaced home?

The heat loss calculation at the free survey determines this. Most LPG-heated Scottish homes require a 8–12kW heat pump. The existing radiators are assessed for compatibility.

Does my LPG installer need to be involved?

Your LPG supplier notifies you of the decommissioning process for the tank. Scottish Energy Efficiency coordinates this as part of the installation process. No separate action needed from you.

Can I get a heat pump instead of LPG if building a new home?

Yes — and for new build or recent build off-gas-grid properties, heat pumps are often the best choice from day one. The same government grants apply to new installations as replacements.
